A&M LP, 1978 (A&M Jazz CD, 1988)
1 skokiaan
2 moonza
3 ring bell
4 happy hanna
5 lobo
6 african summer
7 i'll be there for you
herb alpert, hugh masekela, james gadson, chuck domanico, lee ritenour, freddie harris, arthur adams, hotep cecil barnard, paulinho da costa, caiphus semenya, ian underwood, others; horn section; bg voc incl lani hall, letta mbulu
i know on a blog featuring charles sullivan and woody shaw the two trumpeters featured here might come across as lightweights, and it's true that herb alpert and hugh masekela are much more on the pop tip than spiritual cosmic jazz. but these guys know how to set a groove, and that, as far as i'm concerned, is what counts. it's a&m slickness plus south african exuberance with a little brazilian sheen here and there and a studio full of top session guys. key track, "lobo." hey what edu lobo song is that really. anybody recognize it?

herb alpert did an amazing job reissuing his own catalog recently but somehow this one got skipped over. I remember seeing the LP back in the day, but this is ripped from the now super-collectible CD reissue.
192 kbps, mp3 cd rip.

I have everything of Lani's solo work on CD.

I need that one album...would you consider sharing? If you drop your email address here I won't publish it and will drop you a note.
One of my all time favorite albums, for the good feelings it engenders. You're right, maybe it's not that spiritual, but they do weave a spell ...
