Kenny Barron, Peruvian Blue, 1974

Muse LP, 1974

1 peruvian blue
2 blue monk
3 the procession
4 two areas
5 here's that rainy day
6 in the meantime

kenny barron, ted dunbar, david williams, richard (pablo) landrum, sonny morgan, albert heath

this is kinda two albums. It's got some acoustic standards, and you get the feeling reading the reviews that people who pretend jazz ended about 1965 wish that was all these guys played. but the parts of the album i focus on are some really incredible groovy electric workouts, title track especially. you know "here's that rainy day" is a beautiful song and i guess all piano guys gotta prove their chops playing that stuff, but it's not why i listen to a record like this.

sorry about the bad art, but was the best scan i could snag of the original vinyl which i confess to never owning. cause the cd reissue on 32 jazz, well, somehow they just forgot to design a cover. the ugliest effin' plain blue thing you ever saw. but the cd sure sounds good, and being out of print, that's what you got here.

Thanks for this ish, sweet stuff ;)

I've got the 32 jazz reissue of his '73 album "Sunset to Dawn" - as i'm pretty sure you do too - but if not, it's over at http://orgyinrhythm.blogspot.com/2007/11/kenny-barron-sunset-to-dawn.html

I agree with you, just like when they take a comedy actor and put them in a drama or thriller, it's always interesting to hear what good jazz musos do with electricity.

by the way, I thought you and your readers migh be interested in a series of live 70s Herbie Hancock bootlegs that I've contributed to the guys over at

Yep, Simon, Sunset To Dawn is great. And it would be up here if it wasn't already on orgy in rhythm! Muse was a really great label. Wonder who owns the tapes now?

Glad folks liked this one.

Nice and incredible sounds my bud! I love the cool outlook you have on this one too, right on with it. The sounds when in the groove are so mesmerizing! Love it, cool as usual!

What, no comments since February ?? :)
Hi Ish,
I’ve posted Kenny Barron – “Innocence” (1978) and linked to : this album, all of your Carlos Garnetts, Sonny Fortune's "Awakening"; Buster Williams' "Crystal Reflections"; Jimmy heath's "Gap Seeker" and Albert Heath's "Kwanza". This is clearly a Kenny-friendly blog.
All the Best,
Simon
