carlos santana and the new santana band featuring leon thomas

man oh man oh man. that's what i said when i first heard this. every fan of seventies jazz or progressive music knows santana's "lotus", right? and if you're old enough to remember the vinyl, a really cool desperately hard to find japan-only thing with 3 lps in this glossy origami-like package. well this is not that album, but it is that band, that incredible 1973 world tour. most of these songs feature the late leon thomas, and even more exciting, most of these songs are the repertoire not from santana's glory days but from his days with pharoah sanders.

if ever music has cried out for proper cd release as a sequel to "lotus" itself, this is it. the handwritten notes i received on the cassettes i was once given had some dates and locations. sadly i don't seem to have all that info, but melbourne, carolina, and tokyo were all on the list. it really was a world tour so you can only imagine how much of more of this music must be out there.

it's also hard to believe leon thomas himself has been gone almost nine years... he was a magical talent.

So now the bad news. The quality of some of these tracks ain't that great. a couple of them if you listen through headphones, your brain may start to bleed. the different concert dates, lord knows how many generations of cassette duping, all have taken their toll on this music. there's some messy cassette-to-CD editing that is my sorry sorry fault.

I have scoured the internet looking for better copies of this stuff and never seen anything close. I'm not a big bootleg freak, so maybe some of you lucky downloaders are and can find a better copy. if so, let me know. And thanks to the person who sent me these tapes years back lost somewhere in my middle-aged jazz-addled skull.

And it's not like Carlos Santana is begging for money, but if you never heard the original "Lotus" go out and buy a copy of the nice 2-cd set, eh?

192 kbps mp3, cassette to CD burn.
You gotta download both parts to listen up.

oh, and sorry, but I put a password on this one. I won't make it a habit:

is this line-up the same as the one that you just posted?

Ryan, Ryan, Ryan. Now that's what I call a good commenter!

Yep, that sounds like the same lineup. Obviously the set list only overlaps with the tracks on my download...I don't think I remember "Winterland" on the list of dates on the cassettes I had, though my memory could be faulty. This set list seems closer to the one on the actual Lotus LPs.

I'm downloading as I type. Can't wait to hear it. Thanks so much for the link!

What a great blog. Santana-Leon Thomas is a beautiful find too. I really like the music you are posting. Reminds me so much of the fun I had finding obscure gems through the years. I am enjoying myself browsing through these exquisite albums. Joe Bonner, Hubert Eaves, Andy Bey... Wow! Much obliged. Thanks for the shock of recognition. John - Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Great post--thanks! If you like Santana's Lotus band, then check out what some feel is the best (and best sounding) concert from this tour: Fayetteville, NC, August 18, 1973. It was posted recently in all its soundboard glory at infinitefool.blogspot.com. - Marco
