Abbey Lincoln (Aminata Moseka) featuring Archie Shepp, Golden Lady, 1980

Inner City LP, 1980
(also issued in Europe under the title Painted Lady)

1 sophisticated lady
2 golden lady
3 painted lady
4 throw it away
5 what are you doing the rest of your life
6 caged bird

abbey lincoln, archie shepp, hilton ruiz, roy burroughs, jack gregg, freddie watts
recorded in paris

the last album before abbey lincoln's actual 1980s comeback finds her in the company of a number of stellar american musicians who were all coincidentally touring france at just the right time. apparently trumpeter roy burroughs was touring with sun ra, watts-gregg-and-ruiz were backing up marion brown, and then along comes genius sax player archie shepp, who seems to have spent most of his professional career in europe.

the liner notes explain that abbey lincoln was then going by the name "aminata moseka," given to her by the name of the culture minister of zaire. despite this apparently temporary change in her identity, this is not some afro-centric spiritual jazz fest. it's instead a combination of abbey lincoln originals and standards, including stevie wonder's "golden lady" interpreted in abbey lincoln's own very personal, if straight-ahead, way. archie shepp is sounding great here.

The song "What are you doing the rest of your life" is one of my obsessions for 35 years, I cannot resist the chance to hear Shepp solo on it, the rest will be icing on the cake.

Thanks, friend.

Amazing post! There should be a heaven just for those who save such records from obscurity and upload them. Can't wait to listen to Sophisticated Lady. Is Shepp soloing? Is Abbey up to Jeanne Lee's (who adored her) version on the immortal Blasè by Archie Shepp on Byg?

Thanks for another great post. For anyone interested in Abbey's personal struggles as a black female in 60s jazz who chose to speak her mind I strongly suggest Ingrid Monson's newest book "Freedom Sounds." In fact, I strongly suggest it anyway, it is so excellent. I was going to post the amazon but it was so long I just encourage you to go find it!
