The Ensemble Al-Salaam, The Sojourner, 1974

Strata-East LP, 1974

1 music is nothing but a prayer
2 ecstasy
3 the sojourner
4 circles
5 traces of trane
6 vibration love call
7 malika
8 optimystical
9 peace

khaliq abdul al rouf (e. drew), bevin turnbull, beatrice parker, mashujaa aliye salamu, leroy seals, fred kwaku crawley, andrei strobert

this is a great slice of spiritual jazz. it's kinda the great granddaddy of current neo-soul/jazz acts like fertile ground: jazzy, spiritual, hopeful, righteous; a female vocalist carrying the songs over some pretty awesome instrumental work. if you like doug carn's black jazz albums with his then-wife jean carn's vocals, or the early albums by oneness of juju, this will be right up your alley. one of my favorite strata-east albums.

thanks so much for this great album! unfortunately, the last track 'peace' doesn't appear to be on it though...which is a shame because it's a lovely track...is it just me with this problem? are there any other links to this lp anywhere else which do have the last tune included? anyway, thanks again!

Dusty Jeeves, you are so right. My bad. That's the best track on the album! Thanks for the catch.

Here's a fixed link.

(I've seen this on other blogs, though i'm not sure the links are still active. anyway this is my own vinyl burn, from a few years back. I think I shrieked when I found this super-clean LP.)

Anyone have a non-Divshare link for "The Elephant Trot Dance"?

Thanks in advance.

Some updates:

Dustygroove is (or at least was, recently) selling sealed original vinyl of The Elephant Trot Dance.

Second, Katonah has reclaimed his original rip of this and is now offering it at his blog:
http://katonah-privatepress.blogspot.com/2008/12/khaliq-al-rouf-and-salaam.html

And finally, Dustygroove has a note saying that The Sojourner is due for first-ever release on CD in January 2009. As soon as I see confirmation of that, the links here will be pulled. Support the musicians and buy this CD!

(to un-confuse my update: Katonah's original rip is of Elephant Trot Dance, and is now available off div-share). If you don't have this sequel to The Sojourner, go get it!
