Harold Vick, Steppin' Out, 1963

Blue Note LP, 1963

1 our miss brooks
2 trimmed in blue
3 laura
4 dotti's dream
5 vicksville
6 steppin' out

harold vick, blue mitchell, grant green, john patton, ben dixon

recently el reza posted a more recent vick album--his awesome 1974 strata-east date--and somebody there mentioned they hadn't heard other vick. while that later album is more my taste, this is a pretty nice organ blues/early soul-jazz outing, and with both john patton and grant green it's got some nice moments. according to discogs.com he's got a muse date also, which i would love to hear. somewhere i read his last couple records in the seventies got all slick and disco-funky, but then, everybody was doing that then, weren't they.

UPDATED, 10/08, "Don't Look Back" is now at Neverenoughrhodes, with extra Vick goodies!

Thanks for all this Vick stuff. I had limited exposure to his playing -- mostly with Tolliver's big band -- and I feel like I've really been missing out. This guy is that voice I've been wanting to hear.

Thanks Ish--
Interesting to hear where he came from. Its a typical date in some ways, but his playing is fine. I think one of the reason the Strata East records are so great is 'total artist control'.
Who wouldn't be inspired by that? :^) I liked your Brasilian mix a lot. Amazing variety. Thanks for making it. The music you've found hasn't received much international exposure. I wonder why.

Thanks. A much under-rated musician. Same league as Stan Turrentine, houston Person ...
They were all from a generation that started up playing Blues, Gospel and Rhythm & Blues, and no matter what they played, there was always that blues feeling underneath. I guess it's what makes the music sounds "true". To a degree that i do not often encountered with younger generation musicians, often great technicians but somewhat short on feeling.

Thanks for this album. Vick is a much under-rated musician. Like Stanley Turrentine, Houston Person ... he came from a generation that started up playing Blues and Rhythm & Blues. No matter what they played later on, the blues feeling was always there. That's probably what makes the music sound "true". Even when playing fairly commercial stuff.
It is something i do not find much in the new generation. Very strong on technic, virtuosity, but often short on guts and feelings.
Nevertheless, and with due respect to the late Harold Vick, I must admit that his latest efforts in the disco/funk style were heap of shiite. Probably was short of cash ...
