this is milton's third american album, not counting the sublime "native dancer" with wayne shorter. his first two, also on a&m, and still in print, combined rerecordings of his brazilian hits with solos by american jazz musicians like herbie hancock and the occasional english lyric. this one also presented a choice selection of versions of some of his biggest mid-1970s brazilian songs but omitted the american musician star turns, and as such it seemed to fade quickly, despite the big popularity of brazilian musicians in the fusion scene of the late 1970s. still, the session's musicians are the cream of the mpb scene in which milton flourished. the production is a little slicker than the brazilian versions, and these are less jazzy than some of the tunes on "milton" from 1976. wacky tidbit, the english lyrics to o cio da terra were written with jimmy webb, the genius behind oblique but moving songs like macarthur park.

back in the late 1970s, well ever since, actually, I was a voracious consumer of Brazilian LPs. I owned this one on vinyl, happy to see a cheaper US release from an artist I had sprung for all his import LPs at Tivolli, the only store I recall that carried Brazilian imports. great versions of some of his great tunes, but really, you can't go wrong with any Milton from the 1970s, and a lot of it is available, well, free, here on the internets.

this is burned from the Brazilian import CD, which fell out of print, I think, due to label licensing issues.
