first things first, this is another guest post, this time from kind reader pepper67. let me profusely thank him for this lost gem.
so what would it sound like if fela had played with miles davis? listen to track 1, an absolutely incredible and barely recognizable cover of dizzy's "night in tunisia" and you'll have some idea. i first heard this track on a compilation over at el reza, and had to hear more. enter pepper67.
what a great album. afro-beat, south african jive, some funk, some mellow vocals, a hint of the melancholy of exile, a little commercial gloss care of two of the crusaders (though joe sample's electric piano playing here cooks, not like some of the snoozier later crusaders albums), and lots and lots of groove.

This one is a real mindblower. Much thanks to Pepper for the great share!
thanks Pepper!
Thank you pepper67 I can't get enough of 70s Afro-jazz-funk. The style, though a composite of late 60s jazzy-kwela and late 70s afro-beat-kwela of Masekela's ouvre, it has a solid uniqueness in its approach to groove. A beaut.
Pepper67 and Ish: this MUST be a great one, (1974+fela+miles?!) haven't heard it yet, but thanks in advance!
cheers, E-mile
Absolutely wonderful, thanks to both of you!
I've added your blog to the Digital Meltd0wn Music Blogroll @ http://music-bloggers.blogspot.com
If you would like to link back to me in any way that would be great, however it isn't required in order to be listed. Thanks for making such great music available to us all. Take care.

Thanks, indeed. I can't wait to hear it.
Thanks so much Pep67, I've got copies of Masekela's stuff with Hedzoleh soundz (introducing, colonial man, boy's doin it, etc.) but don't know this one. can't wait to listen!
Oh man, this is sweet! Thanks again Pepper67! A deeper blend of flavors than is found in much of Masakela's work. I Am Not Afraid to say this might be my favorite Masakela album ever!
I agree, Slidewell. Since I posted this I've been listening to it practically non-stop. The fact that it manages to cover so much territory but still hold together, and hold such a kind of emotional impact is really impressive.
Very nice amigo!

Thanks Pepper67- You don't happen to have the Hugh Masekela album - "Home is Where The Heart Is" featuring Larry Willis and Eddie Gomez, been search for it for a while. Thanks
A beautiful record. Respect to Pepper67 for the posting and to ish for the hosting. That I slept on Masekela's 70s output for so long is just plain incomprehensible.
peace,
heiku
All you had to say was Fela meets Miles and you had me there. I can't download it yet because I don't have a premium Raidshare account, but I will in 75 minutes. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Pepper67
i spent time in South africa and Hugh masekela's music really conveys the warmth and wisdom of its people, as well as the struggles they've been throu. looking forward to this.
Thanks Pepper...keep on keeping on!!!
thank you
cheers - love the Night in Tunisia. A real slow burner, and the little rhythm guitar in there really helps keep its groove.
