Eddie Jefferson, Things Are Getting Better, 1974

Muse LP, 1974

1 bitches brew (miles davis)
2 things are getting better (cannonball adderley)
3 freedom jazz dance (eddie harris)
4 night in tunisia (dizzy gillespie)
5 trane's blues (john coltrane)
6 i just got back in town (james moody)
7 billie's bounce (charlie parker)
8 thank you - falletinme be mice elf agin (sly stone)

eddie jefferson, voc
joe newman, billy mitchell, mickey tucker, sam jones, eddie gladden, mildred weston, conrad buckman
produced by don schlitten

back in the 1930s, '40s and '50s eddie jefferson was one of the pioneers of vocalese, where the voice becomes another instrument in the music and not the vehicle for a lyric. jefferson's great brilliance was in his turning the concept on its head, singing improvised lyrics to the music's solo lines. it's not such a novel idea now but back in the day it was sheer genius.

this record, relatively late in his career, has the usual swinging numbers you might expect from such a veteran bopper, and honestly, they're not really to my taste though they're hard to dislike. but the real gems here are his attempt to update his sound for the seventies. jefferson tackles miles' "bitches brew" and eddie harris's "freedom jazz dance" and the results are awesome. keyboardist mickey tucker's electric keyboards are trippy, dark and foreboding, and jefferson's attack suitably psychedelic. the cover of sly and the family stone's "thank you" is also fun.

from the out of print, though not particularly rare Muse CD. Sorry for the bad cover art but the original is so much better than the CD cover art, which is graceless, and this jpg is the best I could fix up from a dearth of downloads. Both are included in the download plus original liner notes.

Nice! I'd requested that on Reza's site earlier. I had it on vinyl ages ago, and was for some reason needing to hear it. This actually reminds me of a blog idea too: music mentioned in Nathaniel Mackey's ongoing epistolary novels, although one would have to concentrate only on the OOP.

I'm with you on your review, though I'd add "Night In Tunisia" to my list, it's got a good feel ...

We've discussed that pHo "Freedom Jazz Dance" compilation series of Muse tracks before : looks like you managed to to score all the original albums :)

Hey Guys,

We’re Late For Class here.

We hope you might like to post our 30th release on your blog. It’s dumb and fun and sure to tick somebody off... and it’s called The Jim Morrison Seance Tapes.

Below is a link for the codes to post any & all of The Jim Morrison Seance Tapes on your blog for free (links, cover, FULL Mp3 player, etc). Your readers might enjoy it and we’d get some free publicity for our free music and free blog. Our folks would love you for it... and we also have pictures of sad-eyed puppies, in case we’re forced to send those, too. Drop us a line so we can add you to our “Bloggers Kind Enough To Promote Us Even Though There's Zilch In It For Them” list. We get almost all our traffic from other bloggers so a link would make all of our collective pants happy.
Thanks, as always.

PRESS RELEASE
July 7, 2008

‘We’re Late For Class’ Jams With Jim Morrison

Via a medium, stoner college jam band We’re Late For Class performed a 14 minute improvisational space jam along with the disembodied voice of Jim Morrison, the late singer of The Doors.

“Why not!?,” said a We’re Late For Class spokesman. “It's cheaper than a living singer, what with classified ads, lodging and alcohol... and besides, you know how lead singers are to deal with.”

It’s entitled The Jim Morrison Seance Tapes and is their 30th. It’s available for free at the band’s blog, http://werelateforclass.blogspot.com

“So you don't think this is just something we slapped together with old recordings and ProTools... (you can hear) the engineer ask Jim for the ‘post-death stuff... the stuff without copyrights,’” the spokesman persisted. “In the end,” he said, ”it went smoother than our Screamin' Jay Hawkins seance.”

The free download also includes a 14 minute instrumental version for those that don’t buy the premise.

What a stupdendous and *odd* record. So much of it seems like it shouldn't work, but it is ultra-hip. Thanks for the great post!

Love Eddie Henderson! I've had a half-dozen or so tracks on comps (FJD, Mojo's, etc) for years but never picked up the records. Fantastic posts, greatly appreciate the chance to hear more!

Excellent, ISH! Jefferson's drop-dead brilliant interpretation of "Bitches Brew" is worth the entire admission price. Much respect is due to EJ for boldly making this one the OPENING cut. Wow.

Thanks,
heiku
