2009 Shares, Requests, Recommendations

In Ile Oxumaré's first year I posted regular lists of what I was looking for. To my amazement, most of what I asked for was shared by generous readers. This year I'd like to do this a little differently. I'll list the things I'm still on the hunt for, but I'm opening this post up for random reader shares and requests. Here's some guidelines:
* For shares please try to keep them in the general scope of what you'd find on this blog: rare groove jazz/kozmigroov/spiritual jazz/eclectic & unusual jazzy-funky-progressive music.
* Do not steal other blogs' rips, though feel free to link to other blogs. If your rip is not original, that's okay, just say so. There's a lot of music out there from SoulSeek etc. that has long passed out of any one uploader's hands.
* Avoid posting material that is readily commercially available or recently reissued on CD. First, because the musicians we admire have the right to make money off their work, and second, to keep this blog out of trouble.
* Feel free to make and answer requests.
* I moderate comments. If you don't want yours published, just say so.
* I will consider, with permission, particularly special contributed items for full featured guest posts on the blog.
I'll keep this one post up for as long as practicable. Happy listening.
Aché-o.

I'll be glad to help anyone out if I can with anything I am able to donate. I don't have a very big collection, though, since I'm a young'n. Haha. My list is tiny.

Bill Dixon - "Intents and Purposes"
Albert Ayler - "My Name is Albert Ayler" (the album, not the documentary)

Ish, I seem to remember reading a couple different strata-east discography blogs. I'll see if I can relocate any of them and help you out with your holy grail.

free bones said...

This might be it. I got this from the time-honored practice of googling the right combinations of words. The resulting download sounds kinda cool, but I have never heard of this group, so I don't know if it's the right thing. It might be the false rerelease that was discussed over at the Strata-East blog. Let me know! I hope I helped!

Thanks Free Bones for your enthusiasm. There's actually been an long discussion here about whether that Baystate Mboom album is the same as the Strata-East one. An unsolved mystery. Check out my previous "Want list" posts for some of the details.

Thanks Jazzypier for your best wishes. Good luck to us both! Glad to see MFS back up and running.

Spiritual Jazz on independent labels. The stuff that rakes big bucks on eBay and can't be bought commercially. I would also like to get turned onto the current spiritual and post-bob jazz. Baikida Carroll;Nicole Mitchell;David Ware; Cha Cha Shaw ;David Boykin live concerts-the stuff that is not on cd's. Pipe Organ Jazz
like Fats Waller's 78's. The Complete Anthony Braxton on Mosaic . Blues on Folk Lyric label. Library Jazz that really grooves. These are my requests. Thanks

free bones said...

Anonymous, what do you mean by library jazz? I might be able to help you a little bit with this.

Please excuse me if that's a silly question.

Anonymous said...

"freebones"-Some quick examples of "library" lp's
JANKO NILOVIC JAZZ IMPRESSIONS 1 MP2000 LIBRARY
FRANCESCO DE MASI - ITALIAN LIBRARY
RICCARDO LUCIANI Jazz Contrepoint SONIMAGE LIBRARY LP
Library music was used for films and was not sold commercially.

Tonight or tomorrow I have a pretty cool Klaus Weiss library recording I think I can share with you. Stay tuned.

Jazzypier has posted Ms Bu on both Nine Sisters and My Favourite Sound. Thanks Jazzypier!

I've been having trouble uploading anything to RS today; soon as I'm able I have a groovy library recording ready.

Crossing another one off my list, Jazzypier has posted the Bobby Pierce! http://jazz-muse.blogspot.com/2008/10/5030-bobby-pierce-new-york-1973.html

I'm a sucker for anything compared to Starta-East, as this one was in a review somewhere. THanks Pier!

Solomon, I may have Dave Liebman's Sweet Hands; the rest are not known to me. I'll dig around. Let's hope for a passing guardian angel!

Happy New Year to all! The 2 biggies on my want list:

*Dave Liebman: Lookout Farm (1973)
*Horace Arnold: Tales of the Exonerated Flea (1974)

Here is a recent rip of mine @ 320 kbps. of Steve Kuhn Trio: Life's Magic (1986) w/ Ron Carter & Al Foster. Recorded live at the Village Vanguard 3/86. Released on Blackhawk Records, seems pretty hard to come by these days. Nice exploratory flights on this, one of my fav trio dates in my collection.

Kippie Moketsi (as), Hal Singer, Duku Makasi (ts), Alain Jean-Marie, Pat Matshikiza (p), Gus Nemeth, Sipho Gumede (b), Oliver Johnson, Gilbert Mathews (d)

1. Blue Stompin
2. Hang on There
3. Scrap Iron
4. Yes Baby

Recorded in Spring 1977, Johannesburg (South Africa)

As you already mentioned the passing guardian angel, I'm hoping he'll carry this in his bag as well!

Mew: thanks a ton for your keen detective work. My mass Googling turned up one inactive link, and I gave up when I hit the tenth page :s

And ish, although there is indeed some priceless GD/NMB dialogue, wasn't it FZ himself that handled that line in Q? My friend who is all things FZ would open up a can of whup-ass on me right now if he were here. You know how those true FZ geeks can be...

Flashback to 1976. I am in my older brother's crashpad, who had taken up residency in the basement at that time. There is a felt blacklight poster on one wall, a "Stoned Agin!" poster on another (how he got that by my parents, I will never know). I am leafing through his record collection when I am struck by the beautiful starkness of a dark blue album cover. Keith Jarrett? Who is he?? My curiosities overcome my fear of my brother telling me NEVER to use his stereo, and I slip it on. Forty minutes later, I feel like the course of my life has been changed forever. It was on that day that I realized that the sounds of Grand Funk Railroad and Foghat would no longer suffice in taking me to where I wanted to go. I, in fact, became a jazzbo-in-training!

This album never seemed to stand out in Sir Gruntalot's vast body of work, and a proper CD reissue has not yet seen the light of day. He is joined by Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, and percussionist Guilherme Franco on 4 lengthy compositions. Do yourself a favor and give this a listen if you have not already, immerse yourself in the music, and perhaps you will be overcome with the same deep emotions I felt as an impressionable 13-year old all those years ago...but hopefully without the fear of a possible pummeling by an older sibling.

Ripped @ 320 from the Impulse Years 1973-74 boxset, includes a previously unreleased track.

ish said...

Great story, IncaRoads. And your brother? Did he never find out?

In 1977 in my first year of college I moved from a dorm to a shared apartment with two roommates. One was a complete stoner. He owned like four records: Mahavishnu Orchestra Apocalypse, Patti Smith Horses, Stomu Yamashta Red Buddha, and The Stranglers. The last one was mostly to impress his French girlfriends, I hated them with a passion, I heard them over and over again. But within a year of moving away from that situation both the Mahavishnu and the Patti Smith had become -- and remain -- two of my favorite records of all time. Ah impressionable youth.

zaibatsu said...

Hi everyone, just a request in case anyone can help, but have been trying to track down Frank Cunimondo's Communication LP (Mondo, 1968) which is currently out of print. If anyone was able to help out I'd be supremely grateful. thanks

IncaRoads said...

LOL, no, he never did find out! I wonder now if I would have undergone the same transformation that day if I had instead picked up The Koln Concert ;)

BTW, my trip down memory lane was so overwhelming that I forgot to specifically mention the title of my download:

Keith Jarrett: Backhand (recorded 10/9-10/74 on Impulse! Records)

Simon666 said...

Thanks for the tip, Simon666. Hopefully it is a date where Jan has a lil' fire lit under him!

For the record, your "Lives of Todd Cochran" blog entry was my favorite one of 2008. Although, after I was done digesting it, I kept thinking: "are we gonna get tested on this??"

Ish,
Your stoner ex-roommate has almost exactly the same tastes as me. I love Mahavishnu, Patti Smith and the Stranglers...but I don't know that Stomu album at all. maybe I should check it out.

Kinggab said...

I have the Visitors' "Motherland," as well as Clifford Jordan's "Inward Fire." How do I upload?

ish said...

Hey Kinggab!

That's great news. It's super easy to upload on Rapidshare (and I imagine the other services like mediafire, etc)--it just takes a bit longer than downloading. ZIP or RAR your files into one compressed archive. Follow the links for uploading on the RS page and just be a little patient. (usually takes about 30 to 45 mins to upload an MP3 album). If you have specific questions feel free to leave your email address here (I will reject comment so it's not public) and send you my email addy back.

Benny Golson: Stardust (1987)

I bought this one back in my CD buying infancy period and was initially impressed with the line-up assembled: Golson, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Marvin Smitty Smith and Mulgrew Miller. Also persuading me was the fact that this was going to be my first (gasp!) digitally RECORDED CD! Yeah, it SOUNDS freakin' fantastic, but I was relieved that the performance was at such a high level as well. About 90% of the music I listen to these days was recorded between 1965-74 (odd, that), but there are some more recent jewels that I like to pull out now and again...this is one of them. With Freddie's recent passing, I feel compelled to get some of his lesser-known works out there to honor the man. This CD was released by Denon/Nippon and seems to have vanished from the public eye. Hope you enjoy!

I, too, will leave a note out for a request. For the longest time, I've been looking for a hi-quality version of Masabumi Kikuchi's "Poo-Sun". It was my introduction to J-jazz, and remains a favorite. However, I only have it at a 192 kbps version I found on slsk a few years ago. FLAC would be great, if possible - this a great album!

Great shares - great stories - I´ll bet this year in jazzblogland will be even better than the last! I have been spinning that Clifford Jordan Quartet - Glass Bead Games a lot lately. And it has become one of my faves! So - I would love just anything by him/them. And just any recomendations of CJQ would be great too.

ish said...

Aribus if you liked Glass Bead Games check out Clifford Jordan's Night of the Mark 7. It was reissued on CD with a ridiculous cover showing Jordan in a suit--this was from an era when Jordan had a bushy beard and long hippy hair. I see that the blog link for this album in the comments here http://jazz-muse.blogspot.com/2008/10/5076-clifford-jordan-night-of-mark-vii.html is no longer public. I'll see if I can get a link for you. Be sure to check out ElGoog's link posted there also.

ish said...

PS to Solomon, I have it on good authority that Walter Bishop's Cubicle will be appearing soon in Blogland, someplace where there is never enough rhodes if you know what I mean. Stay tuned.

Hey Solomon, I see you grabbing more kinds of music than I thought you first went for. What are your three favorite downloads (from anywhere) of this year so far?

Solomon said...

Ish, you're getting me excited! I really love Walter Bishop's playing. I'm a piano player so I try to listen to as many players as I can.

And I love Rhodes! I have two myself. :)

As for my top three of this year, I've been listening to a lot of Blaxploitation soundtracks. I really enjoyed Black Shampoo, Dolemite, Black Belt Jones and many other ones.

It might sound ridiculous but it's something I wanted to do for a while. I'm working on a fake Blaxploitation OST. I started playing some new instruments this year, because I plan on recording everything myself. Flute is definitely my favorite so far. It's so much fun to play!

I really loved:

Peter Herbolzheimer's "Live im Onkel Pö."

Arthur Verocai "Arthur Verocai"

A lot of Frank Wright as well. I really enjoyed "Stove Man, Love Is The Word."

I loved the Klaus Weiss Golden Ring you shared! Some nasty drums.

What are your favorites so far?

Wildgrebe! Thanks for the Liebman! Saved me the rip. Appreciate it!

Solomon that's awesome. I'm jealous of anyone's musical ability. I'm a good listener but I don't play. Your fake blaxploitation soundtrack idea sounds terrific.

My favorite relatively recent discoveries from blogland have been:

Steve Kuhn, that self-titled 70s album with Gary McFarland and Airto. Great stuff. Really opened my eyes to Kuhn who I've since tracked down a ton of.

A really obscure ECM title called Faces from John Clark I know nothing about except it sounds great.

Universal Jones, Vol. 1, which turns out to be pretty much a Eugene McDaniels album.

Ack so much good stuff out there. Love that El Chicano at Soundological. The Harold Vick at Simon's. The Terumasa Hino at El Goog's. Not enough hours in the day!

PS Newk did you see Ear of the Behearer is up at Call It Anything?

Wildgrebe (and Solomon), thanks for posting Dave Liebman's Sweet Hands. I've been searching every couple of weeks for it, because I remember liking the slow unfolding of "Within You and Without You". There's not a lot of jazz with tablas, but I heard Badal "Sweet Hands" Roy last year and he still sounded great.

Sorry for slow response. I've been spending good quality time away from computers (what a concept!). Thanks for pointing out the Redman. Also, although it's really sad and annoying (due to interviewer) to watch:

And:
Berardi, Sangeeta Michael, avant-garde guitarist; b. Waterbury, Conn., Sept. 2, 1939. He began playing guitar at age 10, and started gigging at about 14, but his musical progress was delayed when he was arrested for armed robbery at 18. While in prison, he resumed the guitar and on his release in 1960 began gigging at Providence Coll. and elsewhere while attending the Univ. of Conn. (B.A., English). In 1963, he moved to Chicago where he worked with Baby Face Willette and Joe Diorio, with whom he studied informally. In 1964, he was back in Conn., where he studied with Bertram Turetzky. He led bands in N.Y. with Perry Robinson, Dewey Johnson, and others (1965–8), while studying with Ronnie Ball. He led groups in Woodstock, New Paltz and N.Y., and co-led bands with Sonny Simmons and with Sunny Murray (1968–9). In the spring to fall of 1968, he was the music director at Group 212, a multimedia arts cooperative near Woodstock, bringing Archie Shepp, Murray, and many others and paving the way for the Creative Music Studio. He appeared at N.Y. loft festivals (1970–2) with his own groups and co-led one with Marzette Watts at the East Village Inn, and played in the groups of David Izenson, Roswell Rudd, and Alice Coltrane. In 1972, he began a weekly concert and workshop series on the SUNY New Paltz campus; he later moved to San Francisco where he led bands and performed with Shepp and Pharoah Sanders. From 1975, he became heavily involved with yoga and the music of India. In 1980, he moved back to N.Y. and opened up his 7th Avenue loft as a workshop/performance space featuring Rashied Ali, Sanders, Dave Schnitter, Joe Lovano, and many others until the building closed in 1984. In 1985, he appeared in San Francisco with Shepp. From 1985–8, he concentrated on writing prose and poems and drawing. From 1988–93, Berardi was in El Cerrito, Calif., making occasional appearances. Back on the East Coast, a severe back injury curtailed his playing during 1994–5, but in 1996 he began performing again.

Hey! I have been looking for Bill Dixon's "Intents and Purposes" for the better part of two years, and a blog I follow called EXP ETC. just posted a rip! If this is as hard to find as it seems to be, I thought some others might like to partake as well.

I had to leave a recommendation: Sundance, from 1976, over at http://thingsstuffandmusic.blogspot.com/2008/07/sundance-sundance.html

It's Swedish but please don't even let your mind wander to Abba; it's jazz funk. The opening track is this a groover with a terrific analog synthy hook, and there's an awesomely morose vocal track called "Some Drunk" about some guy getting beaten to death: well I guess you have to hear it. Check it out!

David Grisman Quintet feat. Svend Asmussen: Svingin' With Svend (1988)

Wanted to make this rare collaboration available to readers of this blog. Mandolinist extraordinaire David Grisman joins up with legendary violinist Sven Asmussen on this intimate recording, at times recapturing the vibe of The Hot Club of France in the 1930's. In fact, two Reinhardt-Grappelli numbers are covered. Joining them on this session are:

James Kerwin: bass
George Marsh: drums, percussion, calimba
Dimitri Vandellos: guitar

Recorded live at Fat Tuesday's, NY 11/5-9/86 & at Bay View Studios, Richmond, CA 5/21/87, released on Zebra Acoustic in 1988, since discontinued. Ripped @ 320 kbps.

A3 Chant Inca (4:12)
A4 Sodina (6:35)
B1 The Creator Has A Master-Plan (12:12)
B2 Malagasy (7:10)

track 2,3,4,5 are also on ZAO, probably same sessions, even if date from liner notes don’t corresponds, beeing 1969 and 1971 -from scan of the original vynil- the other two tracks are new to me, the last is a 7 minutes of athmospheric percussions. and i don’t see them in any of the gilson malagasy works that have been around in blogs lately.

Hello, here's my first upload to Ile Oxumare. I think this would be a perfect place for it. I haven't found it elsewhere in the blog world either, so here's my own rip.

TRIO TREITER: Syndrome Of Influence (Hemscho 001, recorded 1975, a private release from Holland)

I don't know anything about this release, except the info given in the back of the cover. Players are three young dutchmen: Hank Van Hemert (tenor, baritone & sopranino sax), Dick Schoonderbeek (contrabass) and Jan Pilon (percussion).
Music can be described as free jazz - I can hear those Willem Breuker or Byard Lancaster influences here and there. The standout cut is the track called Sopranino: A wicked combination of funky beats and free music. I think this was their only release. I hope you enjoy this rare piece of music as much as I do.

Heikki Sarmanto Sextet: Flowers In The Water (EMI Columbia, Finnish only release 1969)

It's the first release under his own name and a true rarity nowadays.
Heikki Sarmanto (piano), Bertil Lövgren (trumpet), Juhani Aaltonen (alto & Tenor sax), Esa Pethman (tenor sax), Teppo Hauta-aho (bass), Matti Koskiala (percussion).
A live recording of 1969. Mastered quite low so there's a bit of background noise audible. Hope you don't mind that - the music itself is very uplifting.

Enjoy, "mellow"

I'm crossing another one off my wishlist:
http://arkadinsark.blogspot.com/2009/05/andy-bey-as-time-goes-by-live-at-bp.html

That would be Andy Bey, live in Croatia. Sherlock "Arkadin" Holmes strikes again.

I really enjoyed Peter Herbolzheimer’s “Live Im Onkel Pö” aka “Catfish” which Arkadin dug out from Soulseek as a request here, so I bought the vinyl and have posted a new rip in WAV/MP3 here .

So thanks to Arkadin, and thanks to Ish for this goldmine of a thread. (and to all who have contributed here).

Hi Reza, about Hilton Felton: same to you, "Family & Friends" is most wanted. here is whole "A Man For All Reasons” if you hadnt known...

EG thanks found that one , one real killer on that album but its his version of Never can say Goodbye thats the track, I have it on cassette only :(

guess so, knew it already. anyway your cassette library seems to be too large and to live long :)
So have you heard "Ode to new life"? very interested in this, too.

Thanks El Goog for the proper link to Hilton Felton. MFS is a great blog; unlike Bentleyfunk which is a parasite blog reposting recent rips from other blogs uncredited.

Hey ish, I checked out that Bentleyfunk place you mentioned just out of curiosity, and I agree with your analysis. However, I did find an album that might find a nice home over at Crap Jazz covers, which has been keeping me laughing for awhile.

I suggest the following tags:
who needs focus?, low-cost escort service, hair with a mind of its own

hope this fits the bill. :)

Nice find, freebones. I will set it up there shortly. Thanks!
